Listen to rich, distortion-free sound from your iPhone without missing any calls with the Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone. Designed to complement the iPhone and certified to meet all "Works with iPhone" and "Works with iPhone 3G" requirements, the T612 won't pick up any of the annoying hum that mobile phones often emit, meaning you can leave your iPhone on and not in airplane mode.

The Altec Lansing T612 Speaker:
  • is specially shielded to complement the iPhone, letting you leave your iPhone on while playing music;
  • provides full-range sound from deep bass to sterling highs;
  • fills music throughout the room with 60 Watts of power; and
  • includes a wireless remote.

XdB bass-enhancement gives deep powerful bass without a subwoofer. View larger.
Big, Full-Bodied Sound
Employing four specially engineered drivers (two 3-inch full-range drivers and two silkdome 1-inch tweeters), the T612 offers smooth, rich sound through the full audio spectrum. Even without a subwoofer, the bass is deep and powerful, thanks to the XdB bass-enhancement technology. The T612 provides a system response from 60 Hz to 20 kHz.

The built-in amplification provides 60 Watts of power RMS (120 Watts Peak), enough power to fill an entire room with dynamic music.

No More Mobile Interference
Unlike most speaker systems, the T612 is shielded from the noise emitted by mobile phones. The upshot is that you won't miss any phone calls because you don't need to put your iPhone in airplane mode just to listen to your music. When you do receive a call, the T612 will automatically pause the music to ensure that you hear your call.

Elegant, Versatile Design
With a minimalist and elegant silver-and-black design, the T612 will look great placed on a table in your living room or mounted on the wall. (A wall-mounting kit is available separately.) A built-in dock places your iPhone or dockable iPod at an easy-to-see angle in the center of the system while charging it. Also, an auxiliary stereo input lets you connect another MP3 or CD player to the system.

A wireless remote is included, allowing you to control such functions as track forward/back, volume, and bass/treble levels from across the room.

The Altec Lansing T612 is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
T612 speaker system, remote control with battery, 3.5mm stereo cable, power supply, docking adapter for iPhone, user manual, and quick connect guide.

The T612 lets you leave your phone on while listening to music so you won't miss any calls.

For 2G Ipod Touch

Review Date: October 21, 2008
Reviewer: Scott, Rochester, NY USA
The current price of 131 is a very good deal. I paid full price for this unit.

Since this does not have a clock or radio, my main purpose of buying this was to get a decent sound on an ipod player. Also, it had to work with 2G Ipod Touch or 3G phone (both charge and play--many unit will play but not charge these new Ipod models).

The choices are few. Some JBLs and Bose (System II), and Polk Audio. I do not know if the more expensive hifi brands work with 2G Touch; I just didn't want to spend 500-600 dollars for an ipod station.

This unit has much more power than the JBLs I tested. The Klipsh units (like IGroove) will not charge IPod touch 2G, although they have excellent sound.

So it came down to Bose SDII vs this unit, which is now less than half the price of the Bose SDII. They are both very good, but this AL unit can get louder with less distortion, and even at lower volumes separates sounds better. I tested both units, using multiple songs/music (classical solo and orchestra; rock; blues; jazz solos and band; folk; acapella like Take6, among others). I'm not sure what to say about people who say the sound is muddled--well, for some recordings this is true, but a modern folk acoustic album, for example, comes out very crisp and alive, or a violin solo, the sound couldn't be more alive. I think I did a fair comparison of these units, and believe the AL unit may be better, and certainly a much better value. The bass/treble control is also quite excellent.

Great speakers for iPHone

Review Date: March 22, 2008
Reviewer: RonAnnArbor, Ann Arbor, MI United States
I have owned several Altec Lansing speaker systems over the year for my iPods...this one is especially designed for the iPhone (and the only one on the market so far).

The sound is clear, rich, and you can crank up the volume quite loudly before you get interference. The sound fills my entire house beautifully.

This is basically plug and play -- plug it in, put in your iPHone or iPod, and play away.

It charges your iPod/iPhone while playing or while in its dock, even when not playing. It does not sync to your computer. It also does not serve as a speakerphone system - you do need to pick up your iPhone to speak into it. When you put it back it the dock, though, it remembers where you were and resumes playing.

It does what it says it will do -- and it is shielded from GSM signal interference, so you do not have to put your iPhone into Airplane Mode, which you must do with any other speaker system on the market currently - that is a plus.

The 199.00 is either cheap for this type of system, or too expensive, depending on your view of things. It is probably overpriced by about 50.00, but you really have no other choice if you want a shielded speaker system for your iPhone.

Recommended.

Perfect with iphone 3G

Review Date: September 1, 2008
Reviewer: Howard Ainsworth,
At first I had some trouble docking my 3G iphone until I removed the iphone adapter that came with the unit.
Bingo! No more problems, 3G works every time with out any errors or phone noise.
The sound is fantastic for a unit of this size and looks very nice, not plastic looking as were many models I considered.
It also works with the new ipod touch, same great sound.
After much shopping around, I believe the T612 is by far the best value and performance any where near it's price range out there right now.

Good but not great sound

Review Date: June 21, 2009
Reviewer: Charles Evans, North Carolina
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2TO3UCTHL5JMI The Altec Lansing 612 is a nice choice for a portable ipod stereo. As the video shows it will work with the Ipod Touch, Iphone, and Ipod classic (among others).

Positives-

- Works with all models of Ipods (but NOT the Shuffle). It is important to note that a plastic insert needs to be added for use with the Iphone (see video). Without using the insert you will get an error message on your Iphone.
- Charges your Ipod
- Will stop playing music and engage the ringer if you get a call on your Iphone.
- Small enough to be highly portable
- Attractive look
- Fully functioning remote - a bit flimsy but it does do the job

Areas to improve

- To me - the sound is a bit flat. The unit would be well served to have more bass response. One solution could be a subwoofer output (This is what cost it one star).
- Would prefer if it was rechargeable - but too be honest it would require a pretty good size battery.

Final Verdict -

A nice choice for this price point. I would prefer a richer sound, but the positives certainly outweigh the negatives - and it may be the best Ipod speaker on the market. This is a great choice for everyone but true sound snobs.

COMMENT - I am getting feedback on my statement that "The sound is flat" Here is my explanation.

I guess I am a bit of an audiophile, but the speaker does not have the bass response to be considered "full". If you were to look at a frequency response chart I would say that the speaker probably fades at about 80-90HZ (although it claims 60HZ on the packaging). In truth, the speaker is unable to move enough air to be effective at frequencies below... say 200HZ.

Compatibility Issues with iPhone 3G

Review Date: December 26, 2008
Reviewer: MadScientist, MA
I bought this device for use with the Apple iPhone 3G. I would give this an even lower rating if I knew of a more viable alternative. The advertisement states clearly that this device, "Works with iPhone 3G."

Pros:
* This speaker system produces very good sound given its size.
* Sturdy construction.
* iPhone 3G Interference is nonexistence.
* Smoothly transitions for incoming calls. The music fades out and the ringer is then heard through the speakers. Music returns when the call ends. It works as a speaker phone except that most people complain that you sound distant. You may use a separate Bluetooth device and this works normally.

Cons:
* I have read that others have encountered this same issue of receiving the nagging messages that appear on the iPhone and state that this device is not compatible with the iPhone 3G. One is then prompted whether or not to switch to airplane mode. Everything appears to work properly if you answer "no" to this query. Answering "yes" will turn off the phone and the unit will work as a MP3 player. Calling Altec customer support does not provide much useful advice. The person that I spoke to denied that the T612 has experienced such an issue. He suggested that I return the unit, which I will. Doing so will require several weeks through Altec. Unfortunately, I suspect that a replacement unit will provide the same results. The meaning of "Works with iPhone 3G" seems to have a very liberal definition. Amazon customer support is usually helpful, unless you are unfortunate enough to get transferred overseas. Be sure to call during normal business hours if you ever expect to get anyone on the other end of the phone that has a clue. Otherwise expect long "on-hold" times and no answers. Amazon should eliminate their useless overseas customer support.
* Plugging the iPhone 3G into the base of the T612 is not very convenient but may be accomplished with a little effort. A docking adaptor is available for free from Altec but requires one to pay a shipping fee of about $3. This should really come with a device that supposedly "Works with iPhone 3G."

I expect that I will return this device but haven't found a better one that actually, "Works with iPhone 3G." I read other reviews that reflect the same issues. Has anyone found a reasonable alternative for use with the iPhone 3G?

WARNNING for new 8GB 3G owners and ipod touch 3G Review

Review Date: September 11, 2009
Reviewer: Hassan B. Bn Hadhram,
Before i start let me just tell you "what's New" with the iPod touch Third generation" :

-Faster Cpu/Double the ram/Better graphic (faster Boot time/faster loading is all what i did notice)
-Double the storage for the same old price
-Voice control (I'll explain it in a second)
-Latest firmware for free
-New Earbuds with built in remote+Microphone (So you can use voice control)

And that is everything~ depends on your needs upgrading from 2G to 3G might be not worth it.

*Important Note* : only the New iPod touch 32GB/64GB are third generation ~ (8GB is repacked 2G) Details below.

About the new Voice control function, if you love to take your iPod with you to the Gym the new feature "Voice control" is pretty cool, it does allow you to control your music via your voice, no need to get the iPod out of your pocket you can simply say "Next" to move to next song, say "shuffle" for shuffle , say "Pause" and music playback will stop etc, that is why i recommend the iPod touch over iPod classic for gym users, my friend bought an iPod classic and now he complains that the iPod classic is too heavy for him when he goes to the gym and he will have to buy another iPod "properly Nano" for his Gym, for me i use my iPod touch for the gym, it's so light that sometimes i forgot that it's even in my pocket.

After playing with my iPod touch 3g for a while i honestly did not notice any difference from the outside or the inside compared to my old iPod touch Second generation (It's supposed to be faster but i did not notice anything during music and video playback or the menus, however browsing with safari and loading facebook was faster, same thing with boot time), you properly can only notice it being faster with heavy applications since video/music playback is already fast enough with 2G.

I got the 64GB iPod 3G for [...]$, if you think of upgrading your 2G iPod touch honestly do yourself a favor and save yourself the money unless you really need that much of a storage (I do that is why i bought one), also remember that the 3G battery lasts less than 2G,(3G battery = 30 Hours of music playback versus 2G 36 hours of music playback according to apple official specs)

*VERY IMPORTANT* for the people who wants the new 8GB version, the new third generation 8GB iPod touch is NOT 3G it's a second generation iPod touch but apple did repack it/renamed it to 3rd generation, which seems to be misleading by APPLE and it's not cool at all, it is IPod Touch 2G+Updated firmware and that is it.

The iPod touch 3rd generation 32GB/64GB versions comes with a free mic+remote with the earbuds while the 8GB do not (it comes with normal earbuds), the 32GB/64GB have the New CPU+Graphic (According to apple the new cpu is twice as fast just like the iPhone 3GS) while the new 8GB use the same old CPU/Chip from the old iPod touch second generation.

Here is APPLE description on the iPod touches page about the 32/64GB versions : """Enjoy all the great features of the 8GB model along with better performance, richer graphics and voice control"""

The iPod touch 3rd generation is the same awesome iPod touch second generation was.
You can play your music/watch your videos/play games, even read your kindle books/etc "you can read amazon big description of what it's capable of if you do not know yet, it's better than what would i say because it has pictures and everything.

The iPod touch got the best browser i have ever seen in a portable device, i do not even need to carry my netbook with me anymore thanks to my iPod touch, if you hated browsing with lame browsers that crash a lot or slow (many mobile phones) trust me on this one, the iPod touch browser is not a toy or a gimmick it is a browser you can depends on, it's super fast and smooth and after using it for like a full year it has only crashed on me once!

Short list of pros and cons about the iPod touch

Pros:
-Slick,small and light device
-Great touch screen
-The BEST web browser on a portable device
-Amazing video/music playback
-App Store (Too many cool applications for Free)
-Display screen is clear and bright
-No bugs and annoying stuff a very reliable hardware
-64GB Flash based mp3 player

Cons:
-Not much of an upgrade over 2G (people were disappointed because they did not get upgrades like camera/OLED/etc)
-Weaker battery, only lasts 30 hours for music playback versus 2G iPod touch 36 Hours music playback
-Expensive for the 64GB version
-Still no FM radio without the use of online applications
-Bluetooth is still half locked

I hope my review was helpful :)
